A police prosecutor is currently seeking advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on whether separate Preliminary Inquiries (PI) should be done into the abduction of two policemen.
Simeon Williams, of 36 Savage Street, West La Penitence, Stravo Evans of 169 Middle Road, La Penitence, and Oliver Franklin of 102 Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, are charged with wrongfully restraining and abducting Andre July. They are also accused of wrongfully restraining and abducting Darwin Hinds.
The indictable offences allegedly occurred on April 1, 2015 at Regent Street, Georgetown. The accused are currently out on High Court bail.
When the case was called yesterday before Magistrate Judy Latchman, Police Prosecutor Vishnu Hunt indicated that he is seeking advice from the DPP on the way forward. He said that he is requesting guidance from the DPP on whether to try the offences jointly – and conduct one PI – as opposed to trying the offences separately, which will entail two PIs being conducted.
The Magistrate deferred the matter until August 22 for reports/commencement of the PI.
The policemen were allegedly abducted by bandits after they carried out a multi-million-dollar robbery at the Bourda Post Office.
It was reported that the men stormed a Pitbull minibus which had brought cash to the Bourda Post Office on the morning of April 1.One of the men allegedly placed a gun to the driver’s head while another relieved the police guard of his weapon. One of the men reportedly took possession of the vehicle, while his accomplice forced the policemen into the back of the bus.
It was reported that they drove off with the cash in the vehicle and abandoned the bus with the policemen at Cemetery Road, Georgetown.
The DPP had withdrawn robbery under-arms charges against the trio to facilitate PI into the abduction charges.
