We are now into the final phase of this year’s Digicel Schools Football Championship
and the wealth of talent that was on display during the national playoffs is enough evidence to suggest that the remaining matches will produce a high quality of competition among the teams.
The quarter-final round of matches will see reigning champion and four-time title holders Christianburg / Wismar play host to Region 6 champion Tutorial at Wisburg, while Region 5 champs Bush Lot tackle Soesdyke Secondary at Rosignol.
According to a source close to the Organisers, this venue is still to be confirmed.
Meanwhile, action continues in Lethem with Region 9 champs Annai taking on North Georgetown winners Chase Academic Foundation and at Bartica, Region 7 title holders DC Caesar Fox (formerly Waramadong) square off against South Georgetown champions Sir Leon.
Two fixtures in the previous round produced penalty shootouts to determine the winners so it clearly means that at this juncture of the championship the quality of the teams are much better, while the intensity of play has increased significantly, making the spectacle a better product to watch.
As customary in most competitions, the early rounds tend to have teams with little technical and tactical skill, but as you go deeper, the minnows are eliminated, leaving the much fancied schools fighting it out for top honours.
These are the ones who’ve invested in preparation and coaches and have given themselves a good chance of lifting the coveted crown.
Here is where the general standard of play increases and the fans get a glimpse of some of the future prospects of the sport.
The level of competition is so stiff that the current champions survived a fierce duel against North West, before escaping with a sudden death penalty win, while Bust Lot were taken to the brink by Mahdia, but managed to advance via a penalty shootout triumph as well.
Such is the toughness to reach the championship game, teams are not going down without a dogfight and to many observers this bodes well for the future sustainability of the championship.
This Sunday is another date with destiny for the standing eight teams and every game is anticipated to be extremely competitive and a must see wherever you are.
