Dear Editor,
There seems to be certain levity in the affairs of City Hall. I feel that the city administration needs to concentrate on matters that are important to its stakeholders. The days for political grandstanding are long gone with the demise of the past regime.
Our city needs to look carefully at matters that affect citizens directly. For example, the city now boasts of sidewalks that are for the most part uneven and dangerous. Some citizens have elevated the sidewalks outside their premises such that those who use walking canes and wheelchairs are challenged when they have to pass those locations. Further, there are those residents who cement the reserves outside their premises. Much of this work leaves the immediate area flooded during the rainy season. A direct result is the deterioration of the street in the immediate vicinity.
Another bugbear is the propensity of high rise buildings without first ensuring that the Fire Service has rescue equipment that reach up to the new heights. It is no point speculating just how persons were able to proceed with such types of structures. City Hall needs to get a grip of things and ensure that all developments must be structured and in keeping with the city’s capabilities.
The clean-up drive must be a sustainable one and need not engage private contractors. The city can engage a ‘force account’ staffing on a temporary basis. These persons can be assured of work three weeks in every month when they are able to do cleaning maintenance. This is better than having unscrupulous persons being given contracts. Many of these ‘contractors’ have men working without appropriate safety gear and in many instances the workers are not paid in a timely manner. City Hall needs to think on these things.
