Four time champions Christianburg / Wismar pose for a photo op after defeating North West Secondary yesterday in Mabaruma.
In a game that provided high drama for the huge turnout of fans, defending champion Christianburg/Wismar beat host North West Secondary in sudden death penalty shoot out to advance to the quarter finals of the Digicel Schools Football Championship yesterday in Mabaruma.
After a lackluster display by both teams in the opening period which failed to produce any goals, the game increased in intensity in the final stanza with the champs forcing the opposition to make a brilliant save, tipping the ball over the bar to keep the proceedings level. Shortly after he was required to make another important save following a one on one situation, diving to his right to gather a tame shot by Brian Johnson.
North West Secondary created a few chances of their own but poor finishing erased those efforts. Attacking with menace Christianburg / Wismar threatened frequently but when the final whistle sounded no team had managed to score forcing a penalty shootout.
It was then that the frame started as the home team took a 2-1 lead. However, at the end of five kicks the teams remained deadlocked at 4-4 prompting sudden death which the champs won to set up a date with Region 6 champs Tutorial on Sunday in Linden. (Rawle Welch)
