Dear Editor;
As you are aware, for the past several years the residents of Phase One, Republic Park have demonstrated profound pride in our community We have collectively taken on the maintenance of street lights to ensure well lighted streets; we cleaned drains, repaired roads, weeded parapets and planted trees to enhance the entrance to our community, all without additional cost to the Council. Residents have also committed to a major project to develop the playing field. While much of the work has been done, much remains to be done. This is a work in progress and the project will go on to completion. Please note, we have only provided a snapshot of the work that we have done so far to improve our community.
However, as we continue to pool our resources to continue the development and improvement of our community, we are deeply troubled, primarily by the inaction of Council to address safety concerns with respect to derelict buildings in the area. Most egregious are the uninhabited properties of the late Mr. Cole — the Castle and the Palace. These buildings are not only eyesores but are havens for vagrants and thieves. It is not unusual for passersby not only to be intimidated and threatened but also being robbed even in daylight.
As law abiding, tax-paying residents, we can no longer tolerate the anxiety, threats to our safety and indeed the safety of anyone visiting our community. These monstrosities have been vacant and in a deplorable condition for many years. Consequently, we are asking council to act immediately to remedy this intolerable situation. We strongly believe these structures should now be dismantled as the owners have had more than enough time to rebuild, repair or dismantle. Note as well, we believe the condition of these buildings could have an adverse economic impact on the value of our homes.
We hope you will address this complaint with the seriousness and urgency it deserves. We intend to pursue this matter diligently in the hope that a satisfactory outcome will be reached.
Residents
Phase One, Republic Park

Over the years I have visited that location I have seen nothing but deterioration of Mr Cole’s buildings.
He is dead and for a while now.
The deteriorations started when he was still alive and more and more deterioration must have followed from lack of maintenance etc.
I sympathize with the residents but an appeal to the newspapers?
The residents have to take a political stance against the Local Council, and work through their political representatives to get some semblance of good
order and governance in place.
The buildings are not only eyesores, but also dangerous to those nearby should there be any nature disturbance.
That vagrants inhabit them and molest the residents and visitors, has been an old complaint and apparently that still continues.
The residents should get some placards and protest outside the offices of some important dignitary who has power to intervene and get action taken.
