The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has recognised the effort of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) and all stakeholders that assisted in Guyana hosting the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Under-16 Championships.
FIBA, through its Americas office, has congratulated Guyana for hosting a successfully regional event. Both FIBA Americas President, Usie Richards and Executive Director, Alberto Garcia were in Guyana for brief stints during the CBC U16 Championships, July 3-16, Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
President of the GABF, Nigel Hinds had said that President David Granger, Minister of State, Joseph Harmon, Ministers of Education Dr. Rupert Roopnarine and Dr. Nicolette Henry, Finance Ministers, Winston Jordon and Jaipaul Sharma, Minister of Infrastructure, David Patterson, Minister of Business, Dominic Gaskin and Minister of Public Telecommunications, Cathy Hughes all played crucial roles in ensuring that Guyana was prepared to host the CBC U16 Championships.
The National Sports Commission and Director of Sport, Christopher Jones also did their part for Guyana. Hinds observed that corporate Guyana including John Fernandes, Quality Seafoods Inc, Ansa McAl Limited, Banks DIH, E-Networks, Impressions and BK International also provided invaluable assistance.
According to Hinds, the hosting of the CBC event, showed that Guyana has the capacity here to provide international services and host international competitions. Below is the full text of the letter from FIBA:
“Dear Friends,
In the name of our President Mr. Usie Richards and on my own, we are pleased to write to you and all your team, in order to express our deepest gratitude for the work in hosting the CBC U16 tournament in Guyana.
We were able to witness on site the quality of organisation and class act involvement, as we know the necessary effort to meet the high demands, and CBC/NF of Guyana were excellent hosts, allowing for great basketball development, cultural exchange and making those involved feel at home.
The event was eye-catching, congratulations.
We express our sincere congratulations for the excellent work.
