Director of Sport, Christopher Jones (right) meeting with MSC President, Avery Trim, members of the Executive and the Boyce and Jefford Organisation in Linden recently.
Director of Sport, Christopher Jones recently met with the management of the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) in Linden where he was updated on the immediate needs of the facility, and what is required for the development of the premier facility in Linden.
In addition to the MSC management, Jones also met with officials from the Boyce/Jefford group, which hosts its annual track and field classic at the venue. Jones committed to assisting with light and ground enhancement until a long-term development plan is hatched.
“I would like to focus my attention on the lights and the ground,” Jones said, adding that because of “what will be obtained in the coming months, such initiatives is a priority for the Department of Sports”.
President of the MSC, Avery Trim, welcomed Jones’ presence and commitment to assist with the development of the facility. Trim said that they cannot do it alone and as such Government input, and corporate support is important in the process.
“We are appreciative of these kind sentiments, and we will continue to work to get this venue up to the level that we know it to be,” Trim said. He said that MSC is upbeat about sports within the community and it is only fair that they have a proper facility.
The Boyce/Jefford Organisation thanked both Jones and Trim for the collaborative effort to get the facility up to a standard. Trim assured that the ground has been kept in a good condition that was visible while new grass was planted.
Last year, the organisers of the track and field meet received assistance from the Ministry of Infrastructure to prepare the ground. A similar route is being touted this year to add to what the MSC has already done to have the best surface.
In addition, while in Linden, newly minted Mayor, Carwyn Holland was also apprised of plans to host the meet and development of the facility. Holland committed to providing all the necessary stakeholder support to ensure that the Linden community benefits.
The Boyce/Jefford Track and Field Classic VII is set for August 27-28, after the Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil where a few of Guyana’s top athletes will be competing. The meet was born in Linden and committed to remaining there.
