Woman makes Guyanese claim to Bajan court

Is she Guyanese, or is she not? That is the question going through the minds of Barbados immigration officials who have detained this convicted shoplifter, now answering to the name, Alexis Ernestine Charles, with the given

The woman who now goes by the name Alexis Charles.

age of 32.

The woman early last week, admitted in a Magistrate’s court to stealing nuts and olive oil worth $38,65 (Bar$1 = US.50 cents), but the case of simple larceny then became shrouded in mystery, when the prosecutor revealed that she had three other matters pending under the name she gave during that hearing, as well with Hosanna Songs and Althea Charles.
The mystery deepened when the prosecutor added that in answering to one of the other charges, the woman had given her identify as Guyanese, and St Lucian in the next instance.
But, under the name Hosanna Songs, she is the holder of a Barbados passport that expires in 2025.
An immigration officer then informed the court that records show that the woman’s passport was issued without the necessary supporting documentation, such as a national identification card.
Nonetheless the woman was in possession of two Barbadian ID cards under the names, Althea Alexis Charles and Althea A. Charles.
She was remanded to a month in prison to give officials time to solve the mystery, but by weekend, the woman was back in court with an Attorney who successfully applied for her to be sent to the Psychiatric Hospital, Black Rock for review and a report.
