North West Secondary was the last team standing at the end of an encounter that resembled a slugfest against Hosororo in the Region 1 final of the Digicel Schools Football Championship yesterday in Moruca. The new champions came from behind twice to send the game into a penalty shootout after regulation time finished 2-2.
Hosororo took the lead after sixteen minutes through Shawn Hercules who received a pass from centre field before unleashing a powerful shot from about 25 meters out that caused a fumble from the goalkeeper before trickling over the goal line. Four minutes later North West Secondary responded in similar fashion through Ronnie Perez whose smashing right footer crashed into the back of the net to tie the fixture. The half came with no team managing to take the ascendancy.
Coming out in the final period, Hosororo squandered a clear opportunity to retake the lead when Travis Inniss with only the goalkeeper to beat sprayed his effort just outside the right upright much to the dismay of his teammates and the large support base.
However, he made amends in the 75th minute of play courtesy of a penalty following a handled ball infringement. With time running out North West threw players forward and got their reward in the 82nd minute when Junior Willis leaped over a host of defenders from a corner kick to deliver a thunderous header into the far corner. With eight minutes plus injury time on the clock both teams failed to create threatening chances before referee Gladsin Johnson sounded the whistle to signal the end of regulation time and into the penalty shootout which North West Secondary won 4-3 and will now take on defending champion Christianburg /Wismar in the National playoff on July 20 in Mabaruma.
