Antigua (Antigua Observer) – It was a horrifying scene on Jonas Road on Friday as family, friends and curious onlookers converged on the spot where 19-year-old Keshawn Freso died in a gruesome car accident.
According to police on the scene, Freso, a Guyanese national, was driving from north to south on the Jonas Road, at about 4:50 pm, when he allegedly overtook three vehicles before slamming into a mango tree and then hitting a light post.
Another passenger in the vehicle Jevon Joseph, 21, is now warded at Mount St. John’s Medical Centre in critical condition.
The vehicle in which they were travelling, a Toyota Platz, A41302 was badly damaged in the rear and came to a stop after entering a field on the left (east) side of the road.
Head of the Traffic Department, Assistant Commissioner of Police McClean Hunte told OBSERVER media, “It’s our first road fatality for 2016, in comparison to last year when there were nine road deaths. We do hope that from now on drivers will listen and pay attention to the education programme we have on the airwaves morning, noon and night, and the no nonsense policies that we have in relation to speeding, driving without a licence, dangerous driving and other driving offences,” ACP Hunte said.
When OBSERVER media arrived at the scene of the accident, Freso’s mother was being restrained and consoled by family members. Not long after, the deceased young man’s grandmother also arrived.
In a state of shock and disbelief, she pleaded to be allowed to cross into the field to confirm with her own eyes that the tragedy had truly taken place.
However, after the mother had identified the young man, the police prevented other family members and onlookers from accessing the scene.
Before long, a crowd of approximately 60 people had gathered and police were forced to begin clearing the road.
Soon after the accident, condolences began pouring in on Keshawn’s Facebook page.
One user said, “Rest in peace to my friend Keshawn Freso. It was just the other night we were laughing remembering the old days. (You are) gone, but not forgotten.”
Another commented, “You’re in a better place.”
One friend attested to the young man’s character saying, “If is one thing I must say (you) never passed me without asking me if I (was) okay. You were such a nice person (and) I’m still in shock.”
