Chase Academy announced their status as one of the favourites to win the 2016 Digicel Schools Football Championship by easily disposing of Bishop’s High en route to winning the Georgetown Zone final yesterday at the Guyana Defence Force ground.
Although missing seven of their first choice players who are on duty with the National Under-17 team, Chase Academy which is being coached by Senior Golden Jaguar Vurlon Mills demolished Bishop’s 13-0 in a lopsided win.
In a game which lacked the ingredients of a final, Chase controlled possession from the opening whistle with forward Kelsey Benjamin putting them ahead six minutes into play, beating two defenders before firing home from inside the box.
Bishop’s found it difficult to match their opponents’ speed and skills, and Ryan ‘Bum Bum’ Hackett extended the lead two minutes later for the first of his four goals. Hackett then netted his second in the 14th minute after receiving a pass from Benjamin inside the 18-yard box.
Job Caesar made up for a missed chance earlier by slotting home in the 30th minute after his initial shot rebounded off Bishop’s goalkeeper Keith Cort. Benjamin notched his second in the 32nd minute as Bishop’s who hardly had a shot on goal trailed 5-0 as the half way point.
Though the writing was already on the wall, Chase seemed hungry for more goals and went on a goal spree in the second half which produced eight goals. Joshua Williams headed home a cross from Benjamin three minutes after resumption before Hackett fired home from just outside the area in the 53rd minute to complete his hat-trick.
Benjamin’s ability to dribble and accelerate made life difficult for Bishop’s defenders as he forced two fine saves from Cort before he registered he achieved his hat-trick in the 64th minute with a left foot shot from inside the box.
Bishop’s had an opportunity to pull one back one minute later but Brandon Walters had his penalty easily saved by goalkeeper Kevis Fraser. That was their only genuine opportunity to score as Chase’ back four stood solid.
Caesar made it 9-0 in the 68th minute after receiving a pass from the energetic Benjamin and calmly beat the goalie to his left. Bishop’s allowed their opponents much space in midfield and Hackett slotted in his fourth in the 70th minute before Stephen Reynolds got his first in the 75th. Timothy Albert and Joshua Williams added their names to the score sheets in the 76th and 79th minute respectively to complete Chase’ rout whilst securing the Georgetown Zone as the best in the city.
