A Corentyne man who used a lance and knife to seriously wound his estranged wife in an attempt to kill her back in 2013, has been sentenced to 15 years in jail.
The man, Chandrasheekar Itwaru, called “Sunil”, 45, of Ankerville, Corentyne, Berbice was on trial before Justice Jo Ann Barlow and a mixed Jury in the Berbice High Court. He was charged with wounding Jasmattie Isaacs, called “Rohonie”, 33, a mother of two with intent to murder her.
He is also charged with wounding the woman with intent to cause her grievous bodily harm, maim, disfigure or disable her.
The attack occurred on November 16, 2013 at Ankerville Port Mourant, Berbice. He was unrepresented in court.
Four witnesses testified.
According to the Prosecution’s case as presented by Attorney at Law, Stacy Goodings, during 2013, the accused had lived with Isaacs, her mother Vijwattie Isaacs and her two sons at her mother’s home at Lot 208 Ankerville, Corentyne, Berbice.
According to the Prosecution, the woman had once lived at the Shelter in Georgetown, but had returned to her mother’s home. She and the accused had lived on and off for nine years. The two children were not his.
The relationship was an abusive one, thus, their constant on and off relationship. Before the latest incident the man had threatened the woman with a cutlass and had beaten her on the road. He also threatened to kill her. He was charged with that offence and was on the run.
On the day in question, about 19:00 hrs the woman was bathing by a barrel in her mother’s back yard when the accused creeped up next to her with a lance and a knife. He pressed the knife to her throat and began boring her with the lance. She was wounded on her belly, hand, head, leg and other parts of her body.
The woman collapsed and only regained consciousness at the Port Mourant Hospital. She was immediately transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital and then to the Georgetown Public Hospital for further medical intervention.
According to the woman’s mother, Vijwattie Isaacs, she had thrown the accused out of her house because of his behaviour. She was particularly upset that he was ill-treating his stepsons.
She stated that she was in her front yard picking flowers to pray when she heard her grandsons frantically calling for her to come see what happen. She kicked off her slippers and ran to the “back yard”. She saw her daughter on the ground and the accused over her. He had a knife and lance in his hands. She began to holler and pelted him.
He crawled through a hole and escaped towards the back. The woman said that when she saw her daughter her intestines were protruding.
Neighbours came out and rushed her daughter to the hospital. She subsequently collapsed.
The man was on the run until he was nabbed on January 24, 2014 at his home.
Also testifying was her sister Shalene Isaacs, who testified to receiving a message on the day in question and rushing to the scene to find her sister badly wounded. She accompanied her to the hospital. Detective Constable Mark Fraser testified to conducting investigations into the matter and arresting the accused who had been on the run. In court, Justice Barlow summed up the evidence for the Jury that subsequently retired and returned within an hour with the verdict of guilty on the first count. Justice Barlow, before passing sentence told the accused that the offence was a serious one. She noted that he was a repeat offender.
She stated that men must learn to move on whenever there is a separation, and no one has the right to take matters in their own hands. “You must be strong enough and be prepared to move on.”
She told the accused that it has to be luck. The situation could have been worse and the circumstances could have been different.
The crime, she said, was one of aggravation and she saw no mitigating circumstances that could work in his favour. She thus sentenced him to 15 years in jail. She prayed that he would use the time to make something of his life. Itwaru had appeared before Magistrate Charlene Artiga in the Whim Magistrate’s Court and was sentenced to four months in jail on a lesser charge.
