Dear Editor,
Please refer to a letter which was published in your Kaieteur News issue on Tuesday, July 12, 2016, captioned Affairs of City in the wrong hands. The writer seems to have a vested interest in City affairs and we are extremely pleased with this interest. However, it is common knowledge that the new administration inherited a shallow treasury, broken administrative systems, and many dilapidated buildings and other situations that are inconsistent with a modern city.
However, the City administration has given an assurance that all of its Municipal buildings and facilities would be repaired; parks and public spaces would be restored and returned to the local communities. I must assure the writer that the process to restore City buildings has commenced and will continue until all of the buildings confirm to health and safety standards. While some buildings have already been repaired, works are ongoing at several others.
Buildings that have been repaired are:
The City Engineer’s building.
The City Constabulary building.
The Sexton’s building.
Works are ongoing at:
Kitty Market.
Albouystown Health Centre.
City Constabulary Training School
Also, several recreational parks have been refurbished and returned to the local communities. These include; Roxanne Burnham Play Park, Merriman Play Park and East Ruimveldt Play Park.
However, we are always grateful for constructive criticism since these would help the Council to improve the services provided to the citizens of Georgetown.
Debra Lewis,
Public Relations Officer (Ag)
