City Magistrate Judy Latchman sentenced a former convict to two years’ imprisonment, after he was found guilty of escaping from lawful custody at the conclusion of a trial yesterday in a City Court.
Randolph Thompson, 34, a father of two, escaped from the lawful custody of Police Constable Peter George, on February 15 at the Tactical Services Unit (TSU) Young Street, Kingston, Georgetown.
On the day in question, Constable George uplifted Thompson from the Camp Street Prison where he was serving a sentence for Simple Larceny. Constable George took Thompson and four other prisoners to the Police Officers’ Mess, Eve Leary, Georgetown.
While there, Thompson requested to use the bathroom and was granted permission to do so. However, Constable George suspected that something was amiss after Thompson did not return after a while.
During her ruling, Magistrate Latchman said that she relied on the evidence given by the policeman. She said that she believed the policeman when he told the court he never gave Thompson permission to escape.
Before passing sentence, the Magistrate took into consideration the seriousness of the offence and the need to prevent others from committing the offence.
When asked by the Magistrate if he had anything to say in mitigation, Thompson remained silent.
During the trial he declined to give evidence and call witnesses on his behalf.
Police Corporal Kerry Bostwick presented the prosecution’s case.
Thompson was previously convicted for stealing a battery valued $70,000 from BK International, Mandela Avenue, Georgetown on June 15, 2015.
On the day in question, around 09:30hrs, Thompson was seen by a security guard climbing over the southern fence of the company. An alarm was raised and Thompson attempted to escape but was subsequently apprehended by employees.
He was taken to the Ruimveldt Police Outpost, where he was arrested and charged.
