The Guyana Amazon Warriors have notched up three wins out of four games at home and only need another victory to qualify for the playoffs. The Warriors eight-wicket win against St. Lucia Zouks on Tuesday night was centered on a second-wicket stand of 84 between Jason Mohammed and Chris Lynn. Mohammed grabbed the man-of-the-match award with an unbeaten 43 off 29 balls while Lynn made 38 not out from 29 balls.
Speaking the Media at the post match conference, Mohammed said he was confident he could have done the job for the Warriors. “As a batter I was positive of taking my team home and starting the tournament on a good note did a lot for our confidence,” he added.
Mohammed pointed out that while the pitch is a difficult one, they adjusted well. “The pitch is very slow, but we had some opportunity to practice here so we had a better idea of what was going on and it really helped us,” he said.
The middle order batman noted that the crowd support has been exceptional. “The crowd here is amazing, they have been like out 12th-man so that serves as an extra motivation, we knew we had to come here and do well for the Amazon and I think they fans are happy with out success so far,” stated Mohammed.
He feels that they have an excellent chance of making it to the playoffs. “Our chances are good, we just have to win another game or two to qualify so it is important that we keep the momentum going, win as much game as possible and take it all they way”.
Mohammed indicated that he will continue to do his best for the team. “I think we are playing good cricket at the moment as we all know not everyone is going to perform, its up to the guys in-form to take up the mantle of leading the team and hopefully the other guys get their strides later in the tourney which will be crucial and I know they will come back strong,” he posited.
Mohammed who dedicated the man-of-the-match award to one of his close associates (Mr. Johnny) who passed away recently noted that there is always room for improvement.” We have been bowling well in the power play overs but we need to limit the runs at the death. The opening partnership has been good, but if we can get a decent start in most of the games that will be good for us,” he related.
Meanwhile, Head Coach Roger Harper said he is satisfied the performance so far. “I am happy with what we have achieved here, we set out to try and win each game and you know three wins at home, but we were disappointed to loose the game against Trinbago Knight Riders we could have played a lot better,” he said.
Harper pointed out that they batted smarter in the game against the Zouks. “The guys that got in finished the game, I think in the Knight Riders game we didn’t bowl as well as we would have liked and they got a few extra runs.”
He stated that the skipper Martin Guptil has been doing a fine job being at the helm of the team. “Five wins out of six games, a lot of credit has to go the captain, the players work together and are happy with each other success. Our plan is to try and win every game and team work is what has got us this far, we are looking forward to continue in the same vein,” the coach said.
The Warriors next assignment is against the Jamaica Tallawahs and Harper explained that they will look at the conditions there before formulating their plans.
