The 2016 edition of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club’s TCL Cricket Academy and Republic Bank Grade 6 Educational Camp got underway at the Area ‘H’ Ground on Monday with dozens of Youths in Attendance. The Academy is being sponsored by Trinidad Cement Ltd at the cost of $230,000, while the Republic Bank is sponsoring the Educational Camp at the cost of $160,000.
Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster, who is overlooking the operation of both projects, expressed his satisfaction at the attendance rate, the positive attitude and the commitment of the youths. The Academy got underway with coaches Delbert Hicks and Eon Hooper taking the excited cricketers throughout a series of physical exercises in fielding drills. Coach Winston Smith, the most experienced of the coaches then led the players in a special 3 hours coaching session on batting. The holiday Camp started with forty eight Grade 6 Students in attendance under the guidance of experienced tutor Pamela Adrian. The students are been taught Maths, English ‘A’, English B, Social Studies, Integrated Science and Basic Spanish with the main aim of assisting them to make a successful transition to the Secondary level.
The long serving Secretary/CEO urged the youths to take advantage of the opportunities been given to them by the RHTYSC, TCL and Republic Bank. He spoke broadly on the importance of discipline, respect for authority and the importance of education. The RHTYSC, he stated was totally committed to assisting every youth in Berbice to fulfil their potential in education and sports but would not tolerate any form of indiscipline from any player or student. The academy would be completed on the 23rd of July while the Camp would last for five weeks.
Meanwhile, beverage distributor Southland International of Eccles Industrial Site handed over a donation of 20 cases of water to assist the Club in hosting the cricket academy. Southland International CEO Irzad Zamal stated that his company was pleased to assist Guyana’s leading youth and sports organisation as it was highly impressed by the work of the Club. The RHTYSC, Zamal stated was a role-model organisation and his company would continue to assist in the future. RHTYSC, Executive Mark Papannah in accepting the donation stated that his organisation appreciated the contribution of the Southland International and assured representatives of the company that they are playing a major role in assisting his Club to develop Guyana’s future cricketing stars.
