Dear Editor;
Members of the Now or Never Farmers Group, The Perth (Central Mahaicony) Farmers Agro-Processing Group and the Woodley Park Farmers Group were the recipients of 17 shade houses and a variety of tools and agro-processing equipment when the non-governmental organization Food for the Poor (Guyana) Incorporated (FFP) commissioned the projects on Wednesday June 29, 2016.
Thirteen 80ft.x 18ft., two 60ft.x 18ft., and one 49ft.x 18ft. shade houses were constructed for 17 women farmers at Woodley Park, one 80ft.x18ft. shade house nursery was built for the farmers of Now or Never village while the Perth (Central Mahaicony) Farmers Group benefited from the upgrading and furnishing of the Farmers Group Agro-processing Centre.
In his remarks at the commissioning of the projects, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of FFP Mr. Kent Vincent said that he was pleased to officially open the shade houses. He explained that FFP was vigorously promoting agriculture as a part of its anniversary year and was happy to partner the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) with the projects. Mr. Vincent further stated that he hoped other communities would benefit from the type of assistance FFP can provide and thanked the donors in Florida for their assistance.
Aaron Ramroop, Coastal Projects Officer of NAREI in his presentation to the farmers of Now or Never said that a part of the Ministry of Agriculture’s mandate was to collaborate with entities such as FFP to assist communities as much as possible. Describing the project as “Climate Smart Agriculture” because of the changing climate, Mr. Ramroop assured the farmers of Now or Never that NAREI will be working closely with them as it relates to the technical aspect of nurserys and nursery management of the production of the seedlings. He further stated that the collaborative effort with FFP and the communities was an excellent initiative.
Members of the groups expressed thanks and appreciation for the support received from FFP. They said that with the acquisition of the shade houses, the crops would be protected from the vagaries of the weather and they envisaged tremendous increase in production and productivity. The members of the Perth (Central Mahaicony) Group said that they too will increase their production with the supermarkets on the coastal areas with the facilities they had acquired.
