Fly Jamaica Regal All stars and Masters once again proved their prowess in the softball arena, but this time off the shores of Guyana. Both teams added another title to their collection of prizes after winning the New York Softball Cricket League All Stars and Masters tournament which was contested in Queens recently.
Regal All Stars the Guyana Softball Cup (GSC) open 2015 champions overcame NYSCL All Stars by two wickets in the 25-over final at Roy Wilkins Park, thereby claiming the Independence Cup. Set 198 for victory Regal, recovered from a precarious 84-7 to achieve their target in 23.4 overs. They were largely indebted to Richard Latiff and Safraz Esau; the pair added 111 for the eight- wicket to resurrect their innings after Bobby Prahalad picked up some early scalps to give the host the upper hand. The experienced Latiff, GSC 2015 open MVP batted with composure in top scoring with 74 while Esau remained unbeaten on 44.Latif struck five fours and one six while Esau hit one four and three sixes. Prahalad had 3-24. The home team innings was built around useful knocks from Kaleem Bux who hit an even half century, Andrew Gonsalves 25 and Prashad Mahadeo 22. Delory Perreira took 2-30.
In an all Guyanese affair Regal who won the GSC masters 2015 crown defeated Guyana Floodlight Softball Cricket Association XI in the Masters final. GFSCA batted first and managed 149-3 off 20 overs. Rama Malone slammed 62; Wayne Jones got 39 not out and Jagdesh Persaud 23. Mahendra Hardyal spearheaded Regal chase with an authoritative unbeaten 52 which included nine fours. Eric Thomas scored 43 not out (2×4,4×6) as Regal reached their target in 18.2 overs.
Latiff was given the most valuable player, best batsman and man-of-the-match in the final awards in the Independence Cup while Bux (fastest half century), Dharanpaul Singh of New York Enforcers (6-28), Azumadeen Mohamed of Queens All Stars (93) were all rewarded for their efforts.
In the Legends Cup Hardyal was voted the man-of-the-match and took the prize for scoring the fastest fifty while Jagdesh Persaud claimed the MVP. Regal skipper Troy Kippins took the trophies for taking the most wickets and best figures (6-11).
The tournament was organised as part of Guyana’s Golden Jubilee celebrations. Both teams collected an eagle trophy while the All Star team pocketed US$4,000 and The Masters unit grabbed US$3,000.
