The Bahamas and Barbados registered victories when the female segment of the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) U16 championships got underway yesterday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The Bahamas defeated Suriname 59-54 in a thrilling encounter to get off their campaign on a positive note. Suriname got the better of the opening exchanges as they won the first quarter 16-13. However, the Bahamas fought feverishly and led by one point at half time with the score on 29-28.
The Bahamas used their speed to good advantage in the third quarter and took a six point lead at the end of the session; 47-41. Suriname showed determination and with 55.4 seconds remaining and with the score at 57-54 in favour of the Bahamas in the last stanza, Suriname’s Cyaram Kensmil had an opportunity to reduce the lead, but missed two free throws. However, Valicia Demeritte picked up two points for Bahamas to seal victory for her team. Demeritte scored a game high 27 points with 11 rebounds, while Janea Bowleg got 11. Anita Tolud led the scoring for Suriname with 17 points with six rebounds and three assists; Mirelva Marcia contributed 16 including five rebounds.
Barbados earned a hard fought victory over Antigua and Barbuda, winning the duel 39-36. Barbados took the first quarter 7-6, but Antigua and Barbuda bounced back in the second quarter leveling the score 17-17. Although Antigua and Barbuda showed determination, Barbados took the lead at the end of the third quarter 27-23, and maintained their lead through out the duel. Zahra Ashby got 12 and Rashana Thorne nine for the winners, while Karel Knight and Rayana Regis scored 12 each for Antigua and Barbuda. (Zaheer Mohamed).
