A 38-year-old miner who killed another man 21 years ago in a row over cigarettes is finally behind bars.
The Princeville, Potaro suspect was arrested recently by ranks at Mahdia and reportedly admitted to the 1995 murder of David Ramcharran, of Seven Miles, Potaro.
In his statement, the suspect said he went to ‘the landing’ that day, and he bought two cartons of cigarettes. He then met Ramcharran and another man. He said that they began to consume vodka and water. While they were drinking, Ramcharran collected the miner’s cigarettes. Around 22.00 hrs, the three men went to Ramcharran’s house at Seven Miles, Potaro, and while there, the suspect asked for his cigarettes.
He alleged that Ramcharran responded by cursing him and also threatened him with a cutlass. The miner said that he fled and Ramcharran and the other man pursued him using a flashlight in their search.
He claimed that Ramcharran eventually caught up with him, and he was forced to stab Ramcharran, who had tried to chop him.
The suspect said that he returned to Princeville, where he disposed of the knife in the Potaro River. He then headed to the back-dam to work, and later learned that Ramcharran had died.
But the suspect got into trouble last Saturday when he stabbed his own brother. He was arrested and taken to the Mahdia Police Station, where a villager informed the police that the suspect was also wanted for Ramcharran’s murder.
Police said that a woman who had witnessed Ramcharran’s murder also gave police a statement.
The miner is likely to be charged shortly.
