Chris Macey scored a helmet-trick to hand Vergenoegen of East Bank Essequibo Region Three title, while Soesdyke were crowned East Bank Demerara champions when the Digicel National Schools Football tournament continued yesterday at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora.
Vergenoegen were clearly the better team as they dominated possession from the opening minute onwards, and West Demerara found it difficult to match them.
Macey put the winners ahead in the 7th minute as his shot from 25 yards out gave the goalkeeper little chance. He then doubled the lead three minutes later with a similar effort. West Demerara showed determination and Ryan Nelson pulled one back in the 15th before Ronaldo Macey netted in the 33rd for Vergenoegen. While Vergenoegen gave their opponents some torrid time upfront, they at times left much space in their defence and Jielel Jansen slotted home in the 37th as West Demerara went to the interval trailing by one. Vergenoegen played like true champions after the break and Jermaine Cumberbatch put them further ahead in the 59th. West Demerara hardly threatened in this session but Vergenoegen forward Macey showed some brilliance. He reached his hat-trick with a fine goal in the 81st minute before scoring his fourth seven minutes later to hand his team a well deserved victory.
Soesdyke beat Camille’s Institute 3-1 to win the East Bank Demerara trophy. Tyrone Khan’s rich form in the tournament showed as he netted the opening goal for Soesdyke in the 17th minute with a fine solo effort handing his team a 1-0 lead at half time.
Soesdyke continued to dominate after the break and Chadulium Williams increased the lead one minute into the second half with a shot from inside the area. Camille’s Institute won a penalty and Isaiah Sam converted in the 75th minute before Soesdyke’s Peter Richmond headed home in the 80th to complete the scoring.
