Two bandits escaped with over $500,000 in cash and jewellery after shooting a Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara bar owner in the leg at around 18.45 hrs yesterday.
Prakash Seegobin, 51, the owner of Percy’s Express Bar, was shot by one of the robbers after he had handed over a quantity of cash to the men, who had cornered him near the bar.
His 27-year-old daughter, Tulsiedai Seegobin, was struck in the head, and relieved of her jewellery.
The robbers also carted off a laptop computer during the approximately 15-minute ordeal, which was recorded on CCTV cameras on the premises.
According to reports, the Seegobin family and two customers were in the bar when two masked men, barged into the Lot 4 Bella Dam, Pouderoyen premises. One had a handgun while his accomplice had a knife.
Tulsiedai Seegobin said she was on the inner stairs leading from the upper flat to the bar when the robbers entered. She said the robber with the gun struck her on the head and arm, relieved her of two wedding rings, a gold band and a chain.
“He beat me and tell me to say where the money was,” she recalled. It was then that her father, who was in the kitchen, came to the bar.
She said that the gunman pushed her father to the floor and ordered him to hand over his money. Mr. Seegobin gave the robber about $500,000, and it was then that the bandit shot her father in the left leg.
The robbers then dragged father and daughter to the upper flat, and pushed them into a room. The daughter said that her husband was also in the bedroom, and the bandits relieved him of a laptop computer and other valuables.
The bandits also ransacked another room before fleeing on foot.
Neighbours took the wounded bar owner to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was treated before being transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
