The prosecution’s failure to file statements in a fraud matter resulted in the charge being dismissed against an alleged visa scammer by Magistrate Judy Latchman yesterday, in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The man, Dhanraj Raghubir, 27, of 26 Gordon Street, Kitty Georgetown was accused of forging a US Embassy appointment letter and also uttering a document that he purported to be issued by the US Embassy, knowing same to be false.
When the matter came up yesterday, an Attorney for Raghubir asked for the case to be dismissed citing the fact that he never received statements in the matter.
The Attorney said that Police Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick was given several adjournments to serve the defence with statements and had failed to do so.
Magistrate Latchman had set yesterday as peremptory date.
Raghubir had been under investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters, Eve Leary, Georgetown after persons alleged that he had scammed them and collected a total of $1M from them on the pretext that he would be able to acquire a US visa, either a visitor’s or permanent, for them.
Police had searched his business place Creative Concepts located at Garnett Street, Newtown, Kitty where three passports belonging to the alleged victims were found.
Earlier this year, police issued a wanted bulletin for Raghubir in relation to investigation into several counts of obtaining money by false pretence.
He currently has several pending matters of a similar nature before the courts.
