Crime Chief, Wendell Blanhum on Saturday signalled his intention of re-opening investigations into the 2010 murder of Demerara Bank employee Sheema Mangar.
But can his team from the Major Crimes Unit find the man who killed the 21-year-old for her phone?
Her mother, Radica Thakoor, was surprised when she saw the news that her daughter’s case was top on the list of those cold cases which the cops will be reopening.
“When I opened the papers, I was surprised to see that the Crime Chief has finally taken an interest in my daughter’s case,” the woman said, while adding that she had been waiting on this moment for a very long time.”
Thakoor said she believes that her daughter’s case is now in the right hands and she is more than convinced that it will be solved this time. She is certain that Blanhum’s announcement is no publicity stunt.
“I saw his (Blanhum) work and think the matter is in the right hands,” the woman said.
Mangar was standing at North Road and Camp Street, awaiting transportation when a man snatched her phone.
After the thief entered a car, she stood in front of the vehicle while demanding that he return the phone.
Instead, the occupants of the vehicle ran her over. She was dragged several feet before the vehicle sped away.
Public-spirited citizens rushed her to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where she was transferred to a private hospital and succumbed the following day.
Two suspects were held but were released after 72 hours.
From under a vehicle they impounded, investigators had retrieved some fibres that they suspected came from clothing Mangar was wearing).
Also, the police had said that two cars suspected of being involved in the matter had been processed and items from the vehicles had been submitted to the Police Forensic Laboratory for analysis but did not yield a positive match.
The Force has been criticized over the sloth in the probe and the failure to produce forensic results from what was thought to be critical evidence.
