A crowd of just over 6,000 braved scorching heat to vociferously urge their team on and when match 10 of this year’s Hero CPL encounter between home team Guyana Amazon Warriors and St Kitts and Nevis Patriots concluded just after 15:00hrs yesterday at Providence the smiles on their faces were as broad as the Essequibo River, Guyana’s largest River.
But the Warriors’ four wicket victory with 22 balls to spare was not as straightforward as the result suggested on another slow and low track which again offered plenty of assistance for the spinners.
In a party-like atmosphere in glorious sunshine and fast outfield, the dancing, flag-waving fans in the stands saw Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa (3-18) helped to restrict Patriots to 108-8 from 20 overs despite a responsible 60-ball 50 with two fours and a six from Lendl Simmons.
Skipper and Man-of-the-Match Martin Guptill came out with positive mind set and blasted four sixes and two fours in an entertaining 43 from 22 balls and along with the team’s other overseas international batsman Chris Lynn, added 60 for the second wicket. Lynn hit a four and a six in a composed 32 from 37 balls,
The Warriors overcame a period when they lost four wickets for 15 runs to reach 109-6 from 16.2 overs to remain unbeaten in four matches, the first two of them on the road.
They now face the Trinbago Knight Riders tonight in the third of their four home matches.
The Patriots, without World Cup t20 final hero Carlos Braithwaite, won the toss and opted to bat first under a high noon sun.
Steven Jacobs, who opened the bowling, soon trapped Evan Lewis (4) LBW at 12-1 and finished with impressive figures of 4-0-7-1.
It was soon 19-2 when Thaisara Perriera, sent as pinch hitter, edged a big swing off Ryad Emrit to the Keeper before he had scored, while Zampa got one to bounce on the two-paced track and Faf du Plessis (1) was taken at short third man to leave the Patriots in a hole on 29-3 in the ninth over as the batsmen struggled to get the ball of the square.
Simmons, who has played for the Warriors for first three CPL’s, yesterday batted sensibly and along with Jonathon Carter (15), crawled to 50 in the 14th over before Carter hit Veerasammy Permaul to long-off at 52-4.
Devon Thomas had done well in important situations in this tournament but yesterday with the cheerleaders gyrating to pulsating music coming from the party stand and the sound of Tassa drums, he tried to loft Zampa over the top and Mohamed held another brilliant catch at mid wicket to send Thomas packing for nine at 73-5 and only debutant Shamarh Brooks (19) offered token resistance after Simmons was run out at 105-7 on reaching his 37th t20 fifty.
While the Patriots never came to terms with the sluggish surface and only hit seven boundaries in their innings the two senior batsmen in the Warriors adjusted better to the pitch and more ‘horizontal bat’ shots.
Dwayne Smith who made 62 in St Kitts and is only behind Chris Gayle (3) with centuries (2) in this tournament offered a tame caught and bowled catch to Jon-Jon Smuts after making five at 7-1.
Lynn and Guptill carried the score to 67 in quick time with Guptill dancing into Smuts’ left arm spin and smashing him into the concrete wall in the Green Stand.
The New Zealander then swept a couple of full tosses in Smuts next over into the advertisement boards beyond the boundary and hammered him for four off successive deliveries before he was removed by Shamsi in the eighth over to trigger a mini collapse in which four wickets tumbled for 15 runs.
Mohamed (1) was stumped off Samuel Badree who got rid of Chris Barnwell for a second ball duck without addition to the score, Bramble (1) was bowled by Shamsi and Lynn was bowled by Smuts 12 runs later as the Warriors slipped to 103-6. But by then it was too little too late for the Patriots who face Barbados Tridents in the next game on Wednesday in Barbados.
Scores: Guyana Amazon Warriors 109 for 6 (Guptill 43, Lynn 34, Badree 2-18) beat St Kitts & Nevis Patriots 108 for 8 (Simmons 50, Zampa 3-18) by four wickets.
