On Saturday 2nd July 2016 the Bartica Mayor’s CARICOM Day Road Race got off to a start at 3.00pm with a large turnout of athletes, competing in the 3 miles event. Athletes competing in various categories were sent off by the Mayor Mr. Gifford Marshall who was visibly elated with the support given by the National Sports Commission, sponsors from the Bartica Business community, spectators and the enthusiasm of the many young athletes and masters who participated.
The race was run at a hectic pace with 34 athletes taking part. Lexroy Rigby ran ahead of the competition, beating second placed S. McAllister and third placed Simon Carter.
In the other categories: UNDER 13 boys – 1st Terrence Hughes, 2nd Morris Arthur, 3rd Lamuel Allen. Under l3 Girls – 1st Selena Stephens, 2nd Rehanna Simon, 3rd Odellia Benjamin.
Under l5 Girls — 1st Naomi Arthur; Under 17 Boys – 1st Rovin Jaggernauth, 2nd Leslie Frankle, 3rd Eziekel King: Under 17 Girls – 1st Lisa Perriera
Open- 1st Lexroy Rigby, 2nd S. McAllister, 3rd Simon Carter.
Mayor Marshall expressed the desire to see more sports and cultural activities in the community as this is the known hub of Tourism in Guyana. Special thanks were expressed to the Pheonix Sports Club and all those who worked behind the scenes to make this race a success.
