The Guyana Police Force (GPF) kicked off its 177th Anniversary celebrations yesterday with the annual Route March.
Some 850 ranks from divisions countrywide gathered to participate in the parade and braved the blistering morning sun. A Community youth group from Essequibo made the long trip to Georgetown to participate. Commissioner of Police, Seelall Persaud lauded the group during the prize giving ceremony after the march.
The parade moved off from the Tactical Services Unit (TSU) Square east into Young street, then south along Camp street, west into Brickdam where they saluted Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan at the Ministry.
The parade then continued north into the Avenue of the Republic and east into Church Street. They then turned north on Camp Street then west into Young Street to salute the Commissioner in front of Police Headquarters before assembling in the TSU Square for the prize giving ceremony.
Commissioner Seelall Persaud in his address to the ranks praised them for their hard work. He noted that results are starting to show.
“We have seen the CID developing, the best it has done in contemporary times, all because of two key issues, building of morale and developing public trust, it has been happening so much, that I have been receiving letters from relatives of persons who were murdered a decade ago and beyond, and in one particular case, a letter from the media asking for the reopening of a case in excess of twenty years ago.”
“We are experiencing the benefits of the hard work we have made to change our organization,” he stated

“We need to keep going in that direction, we have not arrived, and as a matter of fact we are far from there.”
“Unfortunately I cannot say the same of our security intelligence. Fortunately, about a year or so ago, engaged the Jamaican Force Constabulary. They have assisted us and very shortly, coming out of a recommendation from their assessment that they have done, we will start to plan capacity building in intelligence.
“And to see that interface between crime intelligence and special branch, an interface that really delivers the quality of work that all the commanders and all other operational officers would desire in order to plan their work.”
Carting off the trophy and prize money for the best group was the Immigration officers, an all female group, while winners of the best civilian clothed group was the CID division in their smart black and green outfits, also among the winners were the Presidential Guards and the Guyana Police Women’s Association.
The Linden scouts out marched their Georgetown counterparts to be winners of that category. A special prize was given to the Essequibo youth group as a reward for their brave showing and the fact that they had started travelling in the wee hours of Saturday morning to be a part of the 177th anniversary parade.
