A team of investigators has journeyed to a remote mining area in Region Seven to investigate the death of a Russian geologist last month, reportedly from a pit cave-in.
Officials from the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) and the Ministry of Natural Resources on Friday said that they are awaiting the report from the team of investigators to decide the way forward.
Over a week ago, authorities announced that an investigation was launched after it received reports that the Russian official died in the Annamuri Backdam, Mazaruni, Region Seven.
From initial reports, the Russian, whose name was given as Oleg, and a mining worker, Kenneth Smith, were both in a newly dug trench taking samples when one of walls collapsed, covering them. The trench was about 10 feet deep and 45 feet long.
The Russian died on the spot while an injured Smith was taken for medical attention.
Initially, officials of the GGMC said that they were alarmed after learning about the accident and the death about a week after it occurred.
The mining operation is reportedly owned by a company named Innovative Mining Inc., controlled by businessman Parmeshwar ‘Joe’ Jagmohan.
Minister within the Ministry of Natural Resources, Simona Broomes, had confirmed that there was an incident.
From her information initially, the Ministry of Social Protection was notified and a team of labour officials was flown in to investigate. There was no word to GGMC, the regulator.
GGMC was concerned that the company took several days to notify the entity of the accident.
GGMC received the letter on June 23 but it was dated June 20th. The incident reportedly occurred four or five days before.
There has been a number of deadly accidents over the past year with the administration announcing a zero tolerance for any breaches found.
Monitoring has been increased, but miners have reportedly continued to take risks.
