Legal intervention might be needed on the way forward, after the construction company that was tasked with erecting a new wing at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC)’s Maternity Unit, failed to complete the job within the given time frame.
This was the opinion expressed by Minister of Public Health, Dr. George Norton during an interview with this newspaper yesterday.
The new wing was supposed to be opened to the public in March, last, but has been delayed on at least three occasions.
Norton said that based on the last written report he received from the company, the new release date is July 22. However, the Minister said that during a visit to the facility on Wednesday, he observed that much more work needs to be done.
“I am hoping that this is the last time I am saying to the public that it will be opened on this date, and it is in fact opened,” Norton said.
He explained that the construction company claimed that they couldn’t complete the project within the given time frame because of their commitments on other projects.
“There were so many reasons that I find unacceptable. They said that they had to stretch their resources (on other projects). This is a breach of contract and I am disgusted,” Norton stressed.
In the 2016 National Budget, $89M was set aside for the development of the facility’s maternity unit. Apart from the new wing, the unit will benefit from table-top foetal heart rate monitors, hand-held foetal heart monitors and portable ultrasound machines.
The new facility will have 50 beds and a 17-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), an Operating Theatre and birthing rooms that are sound proof
Once completed, the upgrade will see mothers and their newborn benefitting from better patient care while being cared for at the facility.
