A new champion for Region 6 will be crowned in this year’s Digicel Schools Football Championship after Tutorial sent defending champion Berbice High School (BHS) crashing out of the competition following a 7-0 demolition yesterday, at Burnham Park in Berbice.
The former champs were never in contention from the start of the game, conceding two goals in the opening six minutes of the game which gave their supporters an early glimpse of what a bad afternoon was in store for them.
Tutorial opened the scoring in the first minute of play when a clever pass through the middle was latched on to by Orin Glen and he sped past his two markers to hit a firm left-footer into the far corner.
Five minutes later, Berbice High conceded an own goal when a cross from the right flank was inadvertently steered into the goal for a 2-0 lead to Tutorial. Joshua Wilson then entered the scoresheet after outpacing the entire BHS backline to beat the goalkeeper to his left which made it 3-0.
Glen, playing with a lot of freedom and confidence then returned three minutes later to complete a brace courtesy of a charming display of skill. He picked up the ball from around the halfway line, weaved past a host of defenders, before cutting inside the box to fire a fierce right-footer through the goalkeeper’s legs to make it 4-0.
The carnage continued with Jaleel Fraser, who also netted a pair, getting on the scorehseet with a neat finish into the roof of the net, before it was Wilson’s turn to prolong the torment of a clearly lacklustre BHS backline.
It became 7-0 six minutes later with Fraser placing a right-footed shot into the far corner to leave the result beyond doubt. The half came as a relief for BHS as they looked a beaten team. The second period was much different and BHS were a bit unluckly not to score at least three goals, but poor finishing and a bit of ill-luck summed up their afternoon and aspiration of defending their title.
Tutorial now awaits the winner of the clash between Orealla and New Amstredam Technical Institute (NATI) which takes place today, at the same venue.
Soesdyke Secondary come from behind to clinch final berth
Tyrone Khan’s second half hat-trick was the main reason for Soesdyke Secondary’s place in the final of the East Bank Demerara zone after they secured a narrow come from behind 3-2 triumph over St. Cuthbert’s Mission on Wednesday, at Hauraruni.
Playing in the Digicel Schools Football Championship and trailing 2-0 in the second period, the riposte started in the 51st minute when Khan unleashed a thunderous strike into the right corner of the goal.
He muffed a chance to level the proceedings in the 65th minute after racing into the box from the right side, but his attempt with only the goalkeeper produced a wonderful save from the last stop to preserve their advantage. However, five minutes later he made up for the earlier lapse when his fiercely struck right-footer produced a partial stop by the goalkeeper, before the ball crawled over the line to level the game at 2-2.
Playing with much confidence Soesdyke continued their second half assault and who else it was that took them over the line. It was the irrepressible Khan, who got the go ahead goal on the nick of full time when he raced on to a poor clearance from inside the opposition half to fire past the goalkeeper just as the final whistle sounded to set up a clash against Xenon Academy in the final.
Earlier, Elroy Dundas scored with a curling freekick from about 25metres out that sailed over the head of the goalkeeper, before nestling in the back of the goal. St. Cuthbert Mission increased their lead four minutes in the second period through Mark Clenkian, who reached on to a cross to finish clinically.
