The search for a missing University of Guyana Civil Engineer student took an ominous turn yesterday, with police detaining two of his colleagues who were reportedly the last ones seen in his company.
Harris A. Persaud, 19, a second-year UG student of Cane Grove, East Coast Demerara, vanished on Thursday after leaving classes at the University and visiting two of his colleagues, who are renting an apartment at Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara.
Kaieteur News understands that relatives later learnt that he had visited the two students after classes. A relative said that the youths confirmed that they had seen Persaud, but claimed that he subsequently left for Mahaica, where he is on a three-year-attachment with a contracting firm.
But according to the relatives, the woman who rented the two friends the Turkeyen apartment told them yesterday that the two young men and Persaud had left together on Thursday in a car.
Acting on this information, detectives yesterday took the two students into custody at the Brickdam Police Station. Under intense questioning, the youths reportedly told investigators that Persaud had accompanied them to the Kingston seawalls, near the Marriott Hotel. They claimed that they were all swimming in the Atlantic when a wave swept Persaud away.
It is alleged that the friends then panicked and took Persaud’s clothing and his haversack to an area on the East Coast of Demerara where they dumped the items.
Relatives and police have scoured the Kingston area where Persaud allegedly vanished, but found no trace of the missing youth. Late yesterday evening, detectives took the two detained students to the area on the East Coast of Demerara where they had allegedly dumped Persaud’s belongings.
Relatives have posted flyers of the missing teen. They are appealing to anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact them on telephone numbers 678-6950; 257-0129; and 647-9923.
