Argentina’s Ambassador to Guyana, Luis Alberto Martino, during a recent News Conference, disclosed that he was approached by the Guyana Football Rugby Union (GFRU) and the Minister of Education, Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine, to explore the possibility of bringing in an Argentine coach to train the local national team – Guyana’s “Green Machine”.
The Ambassador stated that this was done at the last minute however; he announced that a coach, which has the profile to train the team, was spotted two days ago. However, the current concern is the availability of the coach.
“So I made some calls to our rugby Union through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and we have spotted just yesterday a coach that has the profile to train the national team in a short period and their preparations for the finals. So again, as we speak, I am still awaiting the availability of the coach; when he will be able to fly,” he added.
The Ambassador added that they are looking towards a long term project on rugby and other sports. This project he said will be structured in such away so as to promote the sport at the school level.
Guyana’s Green Machine recently defeated Trinidad and Tobago to win the South Zone and now moves on to the Championship Playoff where they will play the North Zone winners to decide who moves on to round two of qualifying for the Rugby World Cup.
