Kwame McCoy, Shawn Hinds and Jason Abdulla will go on trial from August 8, in relation to an assault they allegedly committed on newspaper columnist, Frederick Kissoon six years ago.
This date was set yesterday by trial Magistrate Judy Latchman in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
McCoy, 40, of 336 Section ‘A’ Diamond, East Bank Demerara; Hinds, 51, of Albouystown, Georgetown, and Abdulla, 34, of James and Barr Streets, Albouystown, Georgetown were also served with statements. The men allegedly threw fecal matter into Kissoon’s face when he emerged from Nigel’s Supermarket, Robb Street, Georgetown, on May 24, 2010.
It was reported that the men walked up to the columnist’s vehicle and threw the substance on him.
After the attack, Kissoon managed to drive behind the perpetrator who ran north along Light Street then west into North Road, before jumping into a waiting motorcar.
Kissoon tried to intercept the vehicle but backed off to avoid a collision.
The accused have been each released on $100,000 bail. Their passports have also been lodged with the court.
It was reported that Abdulla and Hinds confessed to the crime while in custody after police began investigating the matter earlier this year. McCoy remained silent.
Kissoon had told the media that he had always suspected that Hinds, a self-confessed hitman, had a hand in the attack, since the vehicle that the perpetrators used, fit the description of a vehicle Hinds owned. However, he believes that the attack “goes way beyond Kwame McCoy, Hinds and Abdulla.”
Kissoon had explained that he always feared for his life under the Jagdeo administration.
Police Corporal, Kerry Bostwick is representing the prosecution.
