The father of murdered Madewini mechanic, Pooran Baljit testified when the preliminary inquiry (PI) into the capital offence commenced before Magistrate Leron Daly yesterday, in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Rayon Jones, 21, of Lot 212 Fourth Avenue, Bartica is currently on remand for the killing which is alleged to have occurred during the furtherance of a robbery.
Haricharan Baljit, a mechanic, of Lot 57 Madewini, Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara was led in giving his evidence by Police Prosecutor, Inspector Kevin London.
The older Baljit appeared emotional, but managed to keep his composure when asked to recap the events that led up to his son’s death and about finding his son’s body lying motionless in a pool of blood in their home.
Also testifying was Corporal Derwin Eastman. He is stationed at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Brickdam Police Station and attached to the Plain Clothes Patrol Section.
Corporal Eastman testified that he assisted with investigations into the matter.
Thereafter, the prosecutor requested a two-week adjournment date to have all statements filed. He pointed out that Jones’ attorney, Latchmie Rahamat had requested that the PI be done by way of paper committal at the first hearing to save judicial time.
It was reported that Baljit was stabbed to death on June 9, right next to the room his parents were sleeping in at their home located at the aforementioned address. He was discovered with his head hanging out of his bedroom window with blood flowing from stab wounds he received to his shoulder and stomach.
The accused was arrested a few days after the murder on the Georgetown seawall after he was lured there by his girlfriend. It was reported that he told investigators that he had entered Baljit’s bedroom earlier that night, and had hid himself until the victim fell asleep. He reportedly told detectives that Baljit woke up suddenly, and they had a scuffle.
Kaieteur News understands that Jones is known to law enforcement since he had matters for various offences in the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
This matter continues of July 20.
