GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Guyanese Cleveland Forde edged out Trinidadian Curtis Cox to pick up his fifth CARICOM 10k title in the 12th edition of the event staged here yesterday.
In the race held under the theme ‘Promoting Healthy and Peaceful Societies’, the 31-year-old Forde clocked 32.29 minutes as he crossed the line first at the Guyana National Park, with Cox following him home in a time of 32.56.
Winston Missingher of Guyana finished third in a time of 33:28
Vincentian Linda McDonald, meanwhile, dominated the women’s race, coming home first in a time of 37.57 seconds.
Guyanese Euleen Josiah-Tanner clocked 39:46 for second while countrywoman Andrea Foster clinched third spot in 40:37.
The race, held ahead of Monday’s start of the 37th CARICOM Heads of Government Conference here, was attended by CARICOM chairman and Prime Minister of Dominica, Roosevelt Skerritt, along with CARICOM Secretary General, Ambassador Irwin LaRocque.
“All levels of society need to be involved in physical activity to prevent CNCDs (Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases),” Skerritt said.
He reiterated the importance of using physical activity to deal with CNCDs in the region and praised the CARICOM Secretariat for ensuring all levels of society were represented in Sunday’s event.
