Clive Atwell, the 27 year-old who fought for the World Boxing title in Mexico and suffered bleeding in his brain after he fainted in the ninth round of his title fight against Dexter Gonsalves at the Giftland Mall on October 24 and had to an emergency surgery the same night which saved his life, is getting additional assistance.
The Boxer has to do a second surgery to put a ‘plate’ in his head to protect his brain and the operation, which cannot be done in Guyana at this time because of unavailability of the equipment and plate, will be done in Trinidad and cost US$25,000.
The surgery, which is three months overdue, will be done by Dr Mahadeo at the St Clair Medical Centre as soon as Atwell can acquire the funds.
Atwell, his wife and two members of his fund raising Committee departed Guyana for New York on Friday Evening to solicit funds from the US based Guyanese during America’s Independence Weekend actives which included a softball cricket final in NY.
On Friday, Fly Jamaica presented four return tickets to NY, while the Director of Sports Christopher Jones paid for the tax waivers were not approved by the GRA.
Atwell and his team thanked everyone who has contributed towards his recovery, especially the Payless Varity store where an all day fund raising drive was held. Three of Atwell’s titles fights are on sale at the Wellington Street store. The DVD will also be sold in NY.
Meanwhile, Atwell received a donation from Principal Dexter Cornette of GITC, a learning institution which the Boxer attended. Funds were raised by the Students, Teachers and Administrative staff of GITC and were presented to Atwell by Student Association President Jamal Nurse. (Sean Devers)
