– new well slated for November
The Guyana Water Inc. (GWI) Well that provides water for the residents of Diamond Housing Scheme is once again up and running. Some residents began receiving water last Friday, while water was restored to the entire area on Saturday.
The Well at Diamond has been plagued with various issues since its instalment. The pump at the location ceased working a little over a week ago.
Operations Manager of GWI Dwayne Shako at a press conference in June, said in January, he received a call that there was mud in the Well. This was reportedly due to a breach in the ‘wall.’ The problem was rectified and the Well continued to function properly until June, 2, when more issues arose.
The Carbon-steel sleeve casing was found to be rapidly deteriorating and as a result there were several breaches in the wall of the Well. Similar defects, according to Chief Executive of GWI, Dr. Richard Van-West Charles, are occurring in 15 other Wells across Guyana. This was due to poor directives from the previous administration Van-West Charles said.
Subsequently, during a press conference on June 20, he told members of the press that a temporary fix was done at the Diamond Well and the water supply was back to normal in the area.
He stated that a temporary sleeve made of PVC was fitted into the defective carbon steel casing and highlighted that the temporary fix would last some four months. The four months he continued would allow for a new Well to be constructed in order to more efficiently supply the Diamond populace with better quality and service of water.
The CE said that one supply source is insufficient for the approximately 5,000 residents. As a result, he said that after consultation with the Chairman of the Board, Nigel Hinds, the decision was made to construct a second Well that is slated to be completed in a matter of months.
He stressed the need for at least two additional wells so that residents could be the recipients of quality service and quality water.
Meanwhile, Operations Manager Dwayne Shako for comment, Shako told this publication that there should be no further hiccups and this will afford GWI enough time for the new Well to be drilled.
