The cause of death of popular newspaper vendor, Albert (Finny) Ashby, of Half Mile, Wismar, Linden, is yet to be determined, because according to Commander of ‘E’ Division, Calvin Brutus, there are no visible marks of violence on his body.
“We are awaiting the post mortem report to determine the cause of death,” Brutus said.
Ashby was on Friday evening discovered in an ‘unresponsive’ state in front of his shop where he conducted his newspaper business. He was leaning against the shop.
An alarm was raised, and a crowd subsequently gathered.
He was later taken to the Linden Hospital Complex where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Speculation is rife as to how the disabled man might have met his demise.
There are reports that earlier in the evening he had been robbed of a shoulder bag.
Some persons are of the view that he might have been struck a fatal blow by the perpetrator.
This angered many residents who condemned the attack.
“How can anyone in their right senses rob somebody like Finny? This man could hardly talk, had a problem walking and had a finny hand – that’s how he get the name,” one angry resident said.
Those sentiments were echoed by several others.
“Finny was a simple easy going chap- at first was he and he wife used to sell papers, then she died and he continued the business alone. But he never used to trouble nobody, so I don’t know who would want to kill him”, one man pointed out.
According to another resident who preferred to remain anonymous, she was on her way home, when she saw a crowd gathered outside Finny’s shop.
“I see like he lying, bracing against the shop, but I ain’t tek it for nothing. I thought he was just feeling sick, so I drive past. Is this morning I hear he dead. Is a real shock- and if is somebody kill he is a shame and disgrace, because this man was working hard to earn a living despite he challenges.”
Other persons reported seeing Finny earlier on Friday, going about his business of vending newspapers.
Shock and disbelief gripped the Wismar communities of One Mile and Half Mile, as news spread of the suspected murder of the popular newspaper vendor early Friday night.
The body of the middle aged man was discovered outside his shop at Half Mile Wismar, Linden. It was subsequently taken to the Linden hospital Complex.
According to sketchy reports Ashby was earlier robbed by a youth, who ran away leaving his slippers behind.
