An emotional testimony was given by the mother of the two girls who were burnt to death, after an arsonist torched a Robb Street, Georgetown building two years ago.
The woman, Clarissa Rozario, testified on Thursday when the preliminary inquiry (PI) into the murders commenced before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Theresa Rozario, 15; Feresa Rozario, 12; along with their father Hilrod Thomas, 63, were burnt to death after their dwelling house was set on fire reportedly by a “junkie”.
Ganga Krishna, 72, a businessman of Lot 11 North Road Bourda and Avishkar Kissoon, 24, of Lot 1 Sheriff Street, Campbellville are indicted for the capital offence.
During her testimony, the older Rozario fainted while standing in the witness box. This led the court into a short adjournment by the Magistrate. When court resumed the witness was cross examined by Police Prosecutor, Neville Jeffers.
Thereafter, Magistrate McLennan informed the court that she will have the PI completed by paper committal in light of what had transpired. Her decision was met with no objections by defence attorneys for the two accused.
This matter continues on July 14.
Theresa Rozario and Feresa Rozario were trapped in the early morning inferno. They were reportedly asleep at the time. Hilrod Thomas jumped through a window but suffered second and third degree burns. He later succumbed at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Investigations in this matter took police two years to crack. A drug addict reportedly confessed to police that he was offered money to set fire to a disputed Robb and King Streets building in November 2014.
Police believe that the building was torched to drive out individuals who were also claiming ownership of the property by prescriptive rights.
