The Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) staged its 4th annual Individual Triathlon competition as one of the Olympic Day 2016 activities yesterday and saw 14 year-old swimmers, Alex Winter and Amy Grant taking the male and female top spots, respectively, Grant being the lone female competitor.
The event started off with swimming 750m at the National Aquatic Centre, Lilliendaal. The biking stage was 10km and the running leg was 5km.
Defending male champion Noel Culpepper was looking to make a triple as the individual male triathlon champion but he was toppled by debutant Winter who stopped him from adding a third year in a row.
Winter, a third form student at St. Stanislaus College and member of the Dorado Speed Swim Club was first out of the pool and continued his relentless work on the bicycle to stay in front. The title was all Winter’s to take as he went into the running leg leaving his challengers behind with a lead that Culpepper didn’t manage to pull back.
Culpepper, who entered the competition with a leg injury, had to settle for second place. Coming in third was Mario Brummell while last year’s 3rd place finisher, Silas Brummell, placed 4th.
Grant, who is a third form student at The Bishops’ High School, successfully defended her champion title in the female category as the lone competitor to contest this grueling event.
Grant had to scratch three events one month ago in the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) Independence Swim Meet due to a viral infection. She had entered hoping that the illness would not completely take her over but had to pull out due to doctor’s orders.
However, she was able to set two records in the grueling 200m Butterfly and the brutal 400 IM both done on the same day. Grant did not have the opportunity to prepare for the competition but only participated on her ability to fight and a motivation from the desire to make her second time in the competition a repeat of 2015 and she achieved the double.
The GOA congratulated all the participants as well as the individuals who assisted to make the event a success.
