Clive Atwell, the young Guyanese boxer, who has been advised to undergo his second surgery, is scheduled to make an appearance in the United States for the 4th of July Celebrations.
The 27-year-old has been raising funds for his second surgery in Trinidad and Tobago. He is scheduled to be at the Independence Cup Softball Championships today at the New York and Canarsie Park in Brooklyn, where he will be collecting donations as well as selling DVDs of his fights along with locally crafted products.
Atwell currently holds the National Featherweight and Lightweight belts as well as the WBC CABOFE Featherweight and WBC CABOFE JR Welterweight titles.
The Agricola-born youth was in a title fight against fellow Guyanese, T&T based Dexter Gonzales on October 24, last, at the Giftland Mall when he fainted. He was subsequently taken to a city hospital. Atwell had an emergency surgery done the same night due to bleeding in his brain
With all the contenders that he would have gone up against, with all the challenges and turmoil he would have faced growing up, through the many sacrifices and sometimes harsh circumstances, nothing could have prepared him for what he is facing now – but Atwell is optimistic, he has assured himself that God will fight this battle for him and he will emerge victorious – as always.
After his incident, a committee was set up with its primary objective being to solicit funds for Atwell.
Members of this committee include Leslie Black, Local Comedian and Actor, Linden “Jumbie” Jones; Sports reporter, Sean Devers; and Joseph Ramkumar, representative of Payless Variety Store.
Atwell recently stated that Fly Jamaica has come onboard with its donation of free tickets for him and some members of the fundraising committee to travel.
To this date, Atwell and his seven-member committee have raised $1.2M, which is still a far way from the $5M target.
He is also awaiting some monetary assistance promised by the Guyana Government.
Committee members who were present during the interview stated that so far there have been several generous contributions from the public. However, with the medical timeline for the surgery two months overdue; there is still a long way to go.
“I am past the date but I am still holding on. I want to thank the public for their contributions thus far and I am certain that the Diaspora will contribute and with God’s help, we will get there. “Atwell said.
Persons desirous of making donations can still do he said.
He can be contacted on telephone numbers 592-642-9961, 592-672-9215 or email him on…..Also deposits can be made to his Republic Bank Account #242-970-2.
U.S-based Guyanese are encouraged to lend their support and help in whatever way possible.
