Action on day two of the Guyana Squash Association (GSA) Digicel Senior National Squash Championships at the Georgetown Club Inc courts on Thursday night saw compelling performances in the Men’s and Women’s Open matches, while competition continued in the Veterans category.
In the Men’s Open round of sixteen, number one seed Alex Arjoon easily disposed of Rithew Saywack 11/5, 11/1, 11/4, while defending champion Nyron Joseph was a comfortable winner over Darren McDonald 11/4, 11/3, 11/1.
Kristian Jeffrey made light work of Jonathan Antczak only conceding one point and winning 11/0, 11/0, 11/1. Jason Ray Khalil outplayed Anthony Islam 11/4, 11/2, 11/8.
In the match of the evening, former Caribbean junior champion Javed Alli had to call on all of his years of experience when he turned back the challenge of current national junior player Alec Melville in five tough games. Javed won the first two games 11/6, 11/4 but Alec won a close third game 11/9 and then breezed through the fourth without dropping a point winning 11/0. At 10 all in the fifth it was anyone’s game but Javed won the next two points to take the match 12/10.
In the Women’s Open quarter finals, number one seed Ashley Khalil dominated Rebecca Low winning 11/3, 11/1, 11/0, while in the contest between former Caribbean junior champions Akeila Wiltshire and Victoria Arjoon, Wiltshire won 12/10, 11/7, 11/6 and Taylor Fernandes beat Makeda Harding 11/8, 11/3, 11/2
In the Veterans division, GSA President David Fernandes, who celebrated his 49th birthday on the opening night of the five day tournament, ran out of gas and suffered a 11/3, 11/4, 11/2 defeat at the hands of Javed Alli.

Matches were scheduled to continue at 18:00hrs last night. After tonight’s games which begins at 18:00hrs, the finals set is set for Sunday from 11.00hrs and will include a fund raising Bar-B-Q.
