For the first time ever Guyana will be hosting the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) U-16 Championships which starts tomorrow and runs up until July 17 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH).
Joseph ‘Reds’ Perriera, who has been invited by the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) to help promote the event, says it is a developmental tournament.
Perriera, a former GABF President for 1969-1975, informed that new Backboards, scoring equipment and clock have been bought while adding the Government has contributed $2Million and there was also financial support from the private sector. Reds informed that GABF President Nigel Hinds said the new equipment is a tremendous investment in developing the future for Basketball in Guyana.
Reds, who arrived in Guyana on Thursday evening, also informed that a Referee’s Seminar will be held during the tournament.
Guyana’s Male team is grouped with Aruba, Suriname, Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago and face-off with Aruba tomorrow night from 20:00 hrs in a zone ‘B’ clash while BVI, Bahamas, Barbados, Dominica and Antigua are the teams in zone ‘A’.
On the distaff side host Guyana, Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, BVI, USVI are in Zone ‘A’ while only three teams make up zone ‘B’, with Bahamas, T&T and Suriname playing in that zone.
The Sports Hall can accommodate 2,000 and admission is $2,000.
