Man-of-the-match Dwayne Smith smashed a 35 ball 62 to set the perfect foundation for the Guyana Amazon Warriors which chased down St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots 164 to end on 165-6 to ease to an exciting 4-wivket win one ball to spare in their first game and the second match of this year’s Caribbean Premier League last night at Warner Park, Basseterre, St. Kitts.
Pacer Sohail Tanvir took 4-20 when the Patriots batted to help limit the home team to a manageable total (164-9) which the Warriors chased down with one ball to spare. Captain Martin Guptill and Smith set the foundation for the win as they featured in a 62 run opening partnership before Guptill fell for 22 (2×4 1×6) off 16 balls.
Smith was joined by Chris Lynn in the 7th over after Guptill was caught off the final ball of the 6th. Smith, who was hitting the ball well and looking well set fell for 62 (3×4 5×6) off 35 balls with the score on 91.
He became Krishmar Santokie’s 50th CPL scalp as the Jamaican became the first bowler to achieve this landmark beating Dwayne Bravo who is on 49 wickets. Christopher Barnwell went 9 runs later with the score on 100 for 5.
Debutant Anthony Bramble was given out at 134-5 despite TV replays showing Shamsi had bowled a no ball; he went for 14 off 10 balls with two fours. It was eventually left to Jason Mohamed who had to keep the bottom half of the batting together in guiding the Warriors to victory.
Mohamed was left unbeaten on 42 which came off 29 balls decorated with 6 timely boundaries. Tanvir made a rearguard 8 as Veersammy Permaul was left unbeaten on 0 without facing a ball after coming to the wicket when Tanvir went off Santokie with 3-balls remaining in the innings.
The Patriots got off to a bad start after being invited to take first strike by the Amazon Warriors which won the toss. Lendl Simmons went for a duck in the first over caught by Dwayne Smith in the slips off the bowling of Tanvir who also bowled one maiden in his 4 overs.
Evin Lewis did not last very long as he went for 8 bowled by Rayad Emrit with the score on 34 (5.1 overs) following a brief recovery with Faf du Plessis for the second wicket. Jonathan Carter was brilliantly run out by Chris Barnwell for 1 with just a single added to the score and one delivery after the fall of the second wicket.
du Plessis was next out for 30 off 28 balls (2×4 1×6) caught off the bowling of Adam Zampa with the score on 54 in 9.3 overs before a mini recovery for the 5th wicket between Brad Hodge and Devon Thomas. The two took the score to 114 in 14.5 overs when Hodge became Zampa’s second scalp.
Hodge’ contribution was 38 (joint top score) which came off 32 balls (4×4 1×6). Thereafter there was a steady trek of batsmen back to the dugout as the Patriots lost wickets regularly. Thomas was knocked over by Tanvir for 38 (1×4 4×6) after a mini blitz off 17 balls.
Tanvir also accounted for Thisara Perera for a 12 ball 20 (2×6) and Carlos Brathwaite for 5 (1×4); no other batsman was able to get into double figures, extras contributing 12 as the Patriots ended on 164-9 off their 20 overs at 8.20 runs per over. Samuel Badree was unbeaten on 7 and Tabraiz Shamsi 5.
Tanvir was supported well by Adam Zampa who took 3-34 from his 4 overs with the other wicket taken by Emrit for 37.
Today in Trinidad, the Trinbago Knight Riders will entertain the Barbados Tridents from 21:00hrs.
