Dear Editor,
The hypocrisy, the gall and the contempt by the senior officials at City Hall is most disgusting. In a recent news report, a Georgetown City Councillor was accused of invading the privacy of Town Clerk Royston King and his family after he or she allegedly contacted one of King’s daughters about the controversial trip he made to Mexico and Panama with the Mayor and other council members.
It was reported that the Mayor declared at last statutory meeting that “You cannot invade a man’s privacy, not with his girl children; you cannot go to such depths, your family is off-limits”, and that there are so many implications to the issue.
She further suggested that the Councillor who committed this purported infraction could be charged for obstruction, and could even be locked up, as she plans to take up the issue with the Ministry of Social Protection. Royston King for his part is reported to have said that Councillors should not interfere with the work of the administration.
This all seems hunky-dory, but the real question that needs to be asked and answered is whether it is only the Mayor’s or Town Clerk’s children that should be protected or shielded from harm whether physical or psychological? Are they from some royal bloodline whilst other people’s children are mere commoners?
How could these two individuals one of whom is the political head whilst the other is the administrative head of the municipality denounce and rebuke a Councillor for allegedly asking the Town Clerk’s daughter a question about the infamous Mexico/Panama trip, making it out to be such a heinous crime whilst they are guilty of turning a blind eye to far more egregious crimes that are being committed right within the Council and even by them.
Not very long ago, a very senior and infamous member of their City Police Department was arrested by the National Police in Sophia at the home of a young lady, someone’s daughter, while armed with a pistol and intoxicated, for mercilessly beating, kicking and pistol whipping this girl, who is also a staff of the City Police Department. And what did the morally upright and honorable big wigs at City Hall did? Nothing! As it was claimed that this delinquent officer had only a year to go before retirement, and therefore should be protected from conviction lest he loses his benefits such as his pension and gratuity. The young lady was forced to submit an affidavit declining to pursue the matter through the legal system. Could this crime be compared to a Councillor allegedly questioning the daughter of a public servant?
And even more recently, another disturbed male rank of the City Police Department who visited his headquarters late one night was able unimpeded, as everyone in the station had disappeared in effect abandoning the station at that time, to molest a young male prisoner, somebody’s child who in fact is a minor who was being held in custody. This brings another question to mind and that is why the City Police would arrest and detain a juvenile? And what did the highly regarded, upstanding and ethical big wigs do? Absolutely nothing except for releasing this wayward constable from the employ of the Council.
