Firefighters stumbled upon the remains of an unidentified person in an unoccupied house at Wales, West Bank Demerara, early yesterday. They had gone to investigate a fire that had broken out on the property.
The discovery was made shortly after 01:30 hrs yesterday at Lot 1 Goedverwagting, Wales. The origin of the fire has not been determined as yet.
Reports are that firefighters were called to the house by neighbours to put out a blaze and upon doing so, discovered the remains among the rubble in the bathroom area.
The body was burnt beyond recognition. Investigators could not have identified the gender of the corpse.
The cops are hoping that someone would come forward to help identify the dead person since the house had been unoccupied for a number of years and its owner; Elizabeth Sattaur, never permitted anyone to enter the property.
Detectives were unable to obtain useful information from neighbours since they too did not see anyone entering the yard or hear any noise when the fire started.
The owner resides in Timehri, East Bank Demerara and would visit the property occasionally to carry out checks.
During her last visit, she did not notice anything unusual at the property, according to sources.
Investigators believed that the body might be that of a drug addict who sneaked into the yard and then managed to gain entry into the house.
When this newspaper visited the scene yesterday, family members of Sattaur refused to speak to the media.
They would only say that they do not know the identity of the person whose body was found in the house.
A resident in the area, Shameer Ally, said that early yesterday he heard people in the area start making noise and when he went outside to inquire, he noticed the building was on fire.
“I see the estate fire truck was there trying to put out the fire and the police break the lock on the gate for them to get into the yard. Everyone thought was just a fire because people ain’t live there but is when the men went in to investigate, they found the body,” Ally said.
He explained that a lot of destitutes would frequent the area so it would not be strange if the person who was burnt was indeed a destitute who broke into the unoccupied building to seek shelter.
Only last Saturday, the body of Satesh Jagmohan, 20, was found in a charred state in his burnt house at De Willem Village, West Coast Demerara.
The fire started around 22:00 hrs and the house was completely destroyed. It is believed that Jagmohan was burnt to death while he slept.
