“ISIS: there is a bomb in the bag. Give us $10M or you will all die”, were the words written on a note that Terrence McLean gave a supervisor at the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI), on Regent Street, Georgetown, after he had threatened to set off a device.
The 34-year-old man appeared before City Magistrate Judy Latchman yesterday after undergoing psychiatric evaluation. He was jailed for three years after pleading guilty to a charge of demanding money with menace.
McLean, of Charlotte Street, Georgetown admitted that on June 28, at the aforementioned bank, he demanded the money for himself from Dahana Ramjist with intent to steal it. He had no legal representation and showed no remorse for his actions. When asked by the Magistrate if he had anything to say before sentencing, McLean insisted that they (the bank) should have handed over the money to him. The man said that they should have given him the cash before calling police.
He threatened that everyone will die the next time someone comes into the bank with a bomb.
Police Prosecutor Vishnu Hunt told the court that on the day in question, around 09:20 hrs, McLean walked into the bank and requested to speak with the manager. Hunt said that when the convict was given the opportunity to do so, he handed the manager a note stating as quoted above.
The prosecutor added that an alarm was raised and police were summoned to the bank and were able to apprehend McLean after he dropped a haversack on the floor and screamed “Allahu Akbar”.
Lawmen searched the haversack but found nothing of evidential value, except for several documents.
Before passing sentence, the Magistrate considered all mitigating factors and the fact that McLean pleaded guilty at his first appearance.
Magistrate Latchman highlighted the seriousness of the offence. She pointed out that McLean had sent fear into employees of the bank and members of the public who were at the time transacting business.
Kaieteur News was able to confirm that the man pulled a similar stunt almost nine years ago. It was reported that on November 8, 2007, he entered Citizen’s Bank on Camp Street, Georgetown and gave a teller a note demanding $1M, while claiming to have a gun. He was subsequently charged for the alleged robbery attempt.
Reports at the time indicated that he had been deported from Canada. McLean was also charged that same year for attempting to commit a felony.
