Two policemen, who are accused of allowing three prisoners to escape while they were in custody at the Lethem Police Station, were yesterday released on self bail after an appearance before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
Corporal Jessie Browne, 40, of Annai Village, North Rupununi and Constable Dawnley Joseph, 26, of 609 East Ruimveldt, Housing Scheme, Georgetown, denied that between September 16 and 17, 2015, while having lawful custody of three prisoners, allowed them to escape through negligence or carelessness.
Attorney Jerome Khan represented the defendants. He told the court that Browne has been a serving member of the Guyana Police Force (GPF), for the past 21 years. Joseph, Khan stated, has been a policeman for six years.
The lawyer stated that both men are currently on active duty at the Annai Police Station.
According to Khan, at the time of the incident, Browne was the Subordinate Officer (SO) at the Lethem Police Station. Joseph was performing duties. He said that the alleged prison escape occurred in the wee hours of September 17. He said that other prisoners informed his clients that the three had escaped. He pointed out that his clients immediately responded by launching a search.
Khan disclosed that Browne and Joseph searched several communities in the village and also near the border between Guyana and Brazil.
The lawyer requested for Browne and Joseph to be released on reasonable bail because they are not flight risks. He added that his clients have no record of convictions or police accusations and have been fully cooperating with investigators. Khan assured the court that the policemen will make themselves present in court to vindicate their names.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones had no objections to his colleagues being admitted to bail. The matter was transferred to the Lethem Magistrate’s Court.
