Just when many boxing pundits have written her off, saying that she is too old for the sport, Gwendolyn ‘Stealth Bomber’ O’Neil has defied her critics when she registered a victory over Mery Rancier in a fight in Dominican Republic dubbed ‘War in the DR’ on June 24 last.
Details pertaining to the fight are sketchy with reliable sources informing Kaieteur Sport of O’Neil’s victory on a card that featured several top boxers out of the Spanish country.
Consequently, O’Neil, also the United Boxing Federation (UBF) champion, has managed to retain a top position in the world rating and sits at #3 in the heavyweight division of the World International Boxing Association (WIBA) ratings released in early June. Australian, Lisa Marie Vizaniari, is the champion in that division, while WIBC Champion, Mexican, Alejandra Jimenez, enjoys a number 1 ranking. Martha Salazar, who had defeated local pugilist, Pamela London at the Splashmin’s Park in November 2004, is rated at number 2. Kaieteur Sport was unable to engage O’Neil for her thoughts on the just concluded bout and her future career but is still working feverishly to do so.
O’Neil was born in August 1969 and grew up in Barima/Waini region as a farmer. She commenced her professional boxing career in July 1999 in Trinidad and Tobago and suffered an unfortunate loss to Kim ‘Bonecrusher’ Quashie in the latter boxer’s hometown, Trinidad and Tobago. She rebounded to defeat her nemesis twice by knockout, in June 2000 in Quashie’s hometown and then again in May 2002 when she replicated the knockout victory at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH).
O’Neil then went on to chalk up a win over American Kathy Rivers in May 2004 to become the first woman to win world title for Guyana. She has since added four more titles to her bulging collection, the Women’s World Boxing Association super/middleweight title, Women’s International Boxing Association World super middleweight title, the Women’s International Boxing Association World heavyweight title and the United Boxing Federation World female heavyweight title. Her record now stands at 20-7-1 with 3 of her opponents failing to answer the final bell.
