A scintillating performance by top seed, James Krakowsky, saw him amassing an impeccable 6 points with a positive spread of 589 to take the honours in the Insurance Brokers Guyana Ltd Open Scrabble Championship, under the auspices of the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP), last Sunday morning.
The tournament was played at the Herdmanston Lodge, Queenstown, now regarded as the home of the sport, after the players moved over from the Malteenoes Cricket Club early this year.
The tournament attracted 15 players and after six rounds of intense word forming skills, 5 players finished on 5 points apiece with the other podium spots eventually established by the spreads. The descending order was Kevin Williams (318), Moen Gafoor (312), Curtis Liverpool (295), Leon Belony (60) and Colin Chichester (minus 314).
Krakowsky started his trek with a crunching win over Carlton Murray (280) and chalked up his second win against Belony by a spread of 87. Robert Williams was his pre-lunch victim by a spread of 47 and after refilling his reserves the rampaging Krakowsky took care of Ruby Cummings albeit by a slim spread of 5. Kevin Williams did not fare any better and he surrendered by a spread of 75 before Krakowsky wrapped up his day with a victory over Curtis Liverpool (94).
Krakowsky also won the prize for the most bingos even though he was among several players that registered 11 apiece. In the end the organizers gave the prize to him based on the fact that his word, ‘WITHERS, amassed the most points.
Subsequent to the start of the tournament the organizers had committed to a special prize of $2,500 to the first player that spelled out the bingo VARROAS. Kampta Ramnarine did not place among the front runners but he formed the specified bingo and left the venue smiling after receiving his prize.
Meanwhile, Belony served as the Technical Director, and congratulated the eventual winner and the other podium occupants. He noted the large turnout and encouraged the players to continue rendering similar support. He also lauded the quality of the tournament and specially congratulated Kevin Williams, a relatively new player, and Curtis Liverpool who has been absent from competitive scrabble for some time yet returned to mount the podium.
The organizers are still to announce the date for the next tournament but encouraged the players to attend the practice sessions every Thursday evening also at the Herdmanston Lodge.
